All of our applications are ready for and tested on Palm OS5!SafeInHand v6.0

The experts tell you to use a different password for every system and to change them often. So how do you keep track of them all? SafeInHand is a simple password protector. It uses a strong custom encryption routine to prevent unwanted eyes from prying and automatically backs up the file every time you Hot Sync.

Getting Started

The first screen of the program asks for a Master Password. This is a password that you have chosen and is used to access your data. This password can be anything you wish and can be changed later, but it should be something you can remember. If this is your first time running the application, you will be asked to confirm the password you just entered. Do not lose this password, it is used to encrypt the entire database and will not be recoverable if it is forgotten.

On these screens, you can also click the Conceal checkbox to temporarily obscure the password as you write it. This can be useful if there is someone watching you over your shoulder.

For security reasons, whenever the Palm shuts itself off (or is turned off by you), SafeInHand will automatically exit and you will be required to enter your master password again to enter the application again (with one exception, see Keep Alive in the View Entry section below).

Password List

The next screen you will see is the list of your data entries, which will be empty the first time. You can use the New button to create a new entry or View to display the currently selected item. The Lookup field works similarly to the built in address book, as you enter letters into the field, SafeInHand will attempt to select a match based on those letters.

The menu on this screen offers more options and can be accessed by clicking on the bottom left button of the graffiti area.

Add Password Item works just like the New button on the password list screen, Preferences will bring up a window and allow you to set some options, Change Master PW can be used to change the password you use to log into the application, Export Category will export the current category to another database or to the memo pad, and Send/Receive Data will let you send data or import it from an exported database. See below for descriptions on how to use these features.

Viewing, Modifying, and Adding Entries

When you view an entry, a screen like this one will appear to show the information. Clicking in the main area of the screen or on the Edit button will allow you to modify the entry. You can also click the Dupe button to make a duplicate of the current entry and then edit the duplicate. The New button will create a completely new record. At the top of the screen, if you check the Keep Alive box, SafeInHand will keep your Palm powered on and if you turn it off yourself using the power button, it will not exit automatically.

When you add or edit an entry, you name the entry by filling in the field directly below Description of This Entry. This is the only required field on this screen. The other bold text items on this screen are intended to be labels, but they are fully customizable by you. Simply change the text as you would any entry field.

When editing an entry, you can also delete it by clicking the Delete button while on this screen.

The small button labelled R on this screen will generate a random set of characters in the current field. This can be extremely useful when you are trying to create a new password for some system. When clicked, you will be presented a window with options for creating the password. Choose the number of characters for your random password. It will be remembered your choice and use it as the default the next time. Check Can Start With a Non-Alpha Char if it is ok for the random password to start with a character other than A-Z or a-z. Clicking OK will generate a a completely random set of characters. If you wish to have something that may be more understandable or memorable, clicking Pick Two Words will find two words from other data on your Palm and combine them to create a password. (This is not affected by the chosen length.)

Preferences

Clicking Hide Master Password will obscure the master password field on the opening screen by default.

To make it easier to manipulate data within SafeInHand, you can copy and cut things to the PalmOS clipboard. Since you could inadvertantly copy unencrypted, sensitive data to the clipboard, SafeInHand clears the clipboard when it exits by default. Clicking Do Not Clear Clipboard on Exit will prevent that erasure and any data in it will still be available in other applications. This is a security risk, use this feature with caution.

Change Master Password

Use this window to change the password used to enter the application. You will be required to enter the old password and then the new password twice.

Export Category

When you choose to export the category, you will be prompted to enter a description and a destination. The description will be used to label the data you export.

Click To Database to create a data set that can be imported by another copy of SafeInHand. You will then be prompted for a password that will be used to encrypt the exported data. This password will be necessary for someone receiving the data to unencrypt it. This can be left blank, but it is highly discouraged since the data would be stored unencrypted and readable by anyone.

Click To Memo Pad to export the data, unencrypted, to Memo Pad. This method is strongly discouraged since the data could be read by anyone.

Send/Receive Data

When you choose this item from the menu, you will be presented with a list of export/import databases. You will see both databases that you have exported and any other databases you may have received from other sources.

Click Delete to permanently remove the database from your device.

Click Send to send the selected database to another device or computer. Another window will appear to display your sending options. To send the data using the IR port, choose Beam Infrared (you can send the file via infrared to most laptops as well, where you could then attach the file to an email or otherwise). If your device has a Bluetooth radio, you can send the data via Bluetooth by choosing Send Bluetooth. To have this file copied to the desktop computer on the next HotSync, choose Backup Data. After choosing this option, you will be shown the name of the file so you can find it after the next HotSync. Use your desktop computer's Find File feature to look for the filename you are given. That file can be then sent in email to another SafeInHand user and they can install it to their Palm as they would any other PalmOS based application and import it from within SafeInHand. Choose Done when you are ready to return to the previous list.

Click Import to import the selected database into your data. The first thing you will be asked is to enter the password that was used to encrypt the database when it was exported. If this is incorrect, the next screen will show garbage instead of the readable descriptions of the data within. You can then click Re-Enter to enter a different decryption password.

If it is correct, the list will show the correct data descriptions.

After choosing the category into which to import the data, clicking on the Import button will start the process of importing the data. If a duplicate record (an entry with the same description as the incoming one) is detected, you will be given the option to Replace that entry, Add the new one, or Skip the incoming entry.

What Do I Need to Use SafeInHand?

You need a PDA running PalmOS version 3.0 or above and about 75K of space available for the application, plus some additional space for your data (another 50K will be enough for most people). PDAs that have PalmOS 3.0 or above include all devices made by Palm since the Palm III (1998), all devices from Handspring (including the Treo models), all devices from Sony, all of the Kyocera PalmOS Smart Phones, the TRG Pro, the Handera, all of the IBM Workpad series, the PalmOS based Symbol devices, and the PalmOS based Samsung phones. If you need a PDA or want to upgrade, we have a list of devices that we recommend.

Is There a Way to Enter My Information From the Desktop?

There is no desktop component of SafeInHand at this time. There is a Windows based viewer in development that will allow you to view, print hard copies, and export your data. If you are interested in being a beta tester, please send us an email at info@HandAble.com.
