Note: This is a SHAREWARE version of the NavPlan program. It has the same functionality as the production version and the full demonstration version of NavPlan - with some exceptions:

1) The SHAREWARE version has only one database, containing airport data from all 50 states, plus Guam and American Samoa.

2) The SHAREWARE database may not current, but it was current when it was origanally published by the FAA.

3) The SHAREWARE database size is reduced for faster and easier downloading. Only Airports with runways at least 6,000' long are included.  Private and military airports are excluded.  Navaids and Fixes are also excluded to reduce the database file size.

Go to
www.avedware.com to buy the production version of NavPlan ($18), or to download the full demonstration version.  For help, please email us at info@avedware.com

The NavPlan program calculates dead reckoning navigation logs with a database of over 30,000 waypoints from the FAA's databases.  All public, private and military airports are included - plus every navaid, intersection, and fix shown on the VFR and IFR enroute charts.  An unlimited number of user waypoints can also be defined.

Navigation logs are calculated for True Course, Magnetic Course, and Magnetic Heading using actual wind and airplane performance data.  Magnetic Heading calculations include ground speed and estimated time enroute.  Distance and fuel totals are displayed in either running total or individual trip leg formats.  Up to 10 trips can be stored, and each trip can have up to 20 waypoints.

Bonus features include the actual intersection and fix definitions: bearing and distance to the stations that define them.

There are four separate
NavPlan databases that can be loaded to meet your specific needs.  All airports, public and private, (including military) are in two databases.  Navaids and intersection/fix waypoints are also in two separate databases.  The databases are the following sizes:  Note: These files are in the Production version and the Full Demonstration versions only.  The data file in this version is only 33K.

     177K     Public Airports
     472K     Private & Military Airports
       93K     Navaids
     524K     Fixes

NavPlan also requires loading a 50K  freeware math subroutine library, Mathlib.prc.  Mathlib.prc is included with all versions of NavPlan.

INSTALLATION

To install the
NavPlan program you must run the NavPlan102 Shareware.exe installation program on the PC that has your Palm Desktop software installed.

The NavPlan102 Shareware.exe installation program will allow you to select which
NavPlan database files you want to install.  If your Palm Desktop is configured for multiple users, the NavPlan102 Shareware.exe installation program will allow you to select the user for the installation.

The
NavPlan102 Shareware.exe installation program loads the NavPlan program and database files you select in your Palm Desktop software for your next HOTSYNC operation.  After running the NavPlan102 Shareware.exe installation program, you must perform a HOTSYNC.

A backup copy of the
NavPlan program and all database files are saved in an AVEDWARE directory on your PC.  You can add or reinstall any NavPlan files by either running the NavPlan102.exe installation program again, or by using the Palm Desktop software and manually selecting the files from AVEDWARE directory.

PROGRAM and DATABASE FILES

The files in this distribution are as follows:

Nav Plan 1-02 (SW).prc

Nav Plan Shareware Data.pdb

MathLib.prc

NavPlan Demonstration Program file, version 1.02

NavPlan Shareware Public Airports file

MathLib math subroutine library freeware (required)

Note: This installation will remove any previously installed versions of NavPlan.    You may also remove other NavPlan versions by deleting them directly from your Palm OS(r) handheld.

NavPlan DATABASE DELETION

On the first NavPlan program screen, press the menu icon on the graffiti area.  Under the LOOKUP menu, tap DATABASE EXPIRATIONS.  This screen allows you to select and delete any of the database files.  You may reinstall any of the database files at any time.

NavPlan DATABASE UPDATES

To update an
NavPlan database, simply install the new one.  It will automatically replace the older database.  CAUTION: Installing an older database will also replace a newer one.

CREATING A TRIP

NavPlan has two screens - the "Trip" screen and the "Navigation Log" screen.  The Trip screen comes up first when you start NavPlan.

Use the Trip screen to input the route of your trip using airports, navaids, fix/intersection, or user waypoints.  Identifiers are input using their standard three letter codes.  (
NavPlan does not use the ICAO identifiers - which may require a "K" before some airport codes.  For example, please input "SFO" for San Francisco International, not "KSFO".)

Some identifier codes represent both airports and navaids.  If you use one of these,
NavPlan will show you both on a list, and you can choose which one you want.  If you prefer, you can tap in the TYPE field, and select the type from a list.

NavPlan will remember up to 10 different trips.  You can use the pull-down in the upper right corner to select which trip you want to use.

DISPLAYING A NAVIGATION LOG

Before displaying the Navigation Log screen, it's a good idea to input your aircraft performance and winds data.  You can only do this from the Navigation Log screen by tapping on the menu icon in the graffiti area, and selecting Airplane or Winds under the SETTINGS menu.

After entering a list of identifiers on the Trip screen, tap on the Calc Trip button to display the Navigation Log screen.  If you haven't input your airplanes true airspeed and fuel rate,
NavPlan will prompt you for this information.  If NavPlan finds duplicate entries in the database for any identifier, it will show them on a list, and allow you to select the one you wish.

The Navigation Log screen will show either the True Course, Magnetic Course, or Magnetic Heading in the first column.  You can toggle between these by tapping on the CRS/HDG button.  When Magnetic Heading is selected, the Navigation Log will display ground speed in the second column instead of distance.

The Navigation Log screen will display either a running total for Fuel and Estimated Time Enroute, or the amount for each leg.  You can toggle between these by tapping on the Legs/Total button.

FINDING AN AIRPORT

NavPlan has every airport in the FAA's databases in it's two airports databases.  If you do not know the identifier of your airport, it's easy to find using the Lookup feature.  On the Trip screen, tap on the trip leg number's Identifier field where you want to put the airport.  Next, tap on the menu icon in the graffiti area.  Choose Airports from the LOOKUP menu.  Input any text string from the airport's name in the Lookup Airport dialog box, and tap on the Search button.  A list of matching airports will be displayed.  Scroll to the one you want, select it by tapping on it once, and the tap on the OK button.  You will then return to the Trip screen with the airport identifier in the position you requested.

DISPLAYING MORE INFORMATION ABOUT A WAYPOINT

On either the Trip screen or the Navigation Log screen, you can tap on the identifier for a pop-up balloon for more information about the waypoint.  All waypoints will display the lat/lon in the pop-up balloon.  Fix/intersection waypoints will also display the navaids, bearing and distance from the navaids that define their position.  Airports display their full name, state, and magnetic variance.  For complete airport information about public airports, use AVEDWARE's A/FD program.

APPLICATION SETTINGS

Because
NavPlan includes all navaids in the FAA's database, it also includes VOT's and navaids marked as "Not Common System Usage."  (primarily private navaids)  By default, NavPlan excludes these navaids.  You can configure NavPlan to include either of these navaids by tapping on the menu icon in the graffiti area, and selecting Application on the SETTINGS menu.

NavPlan also uses nautical miles by default.  You can specify statue miles in the Application Settings.

NavPlan does not specify the units on the fuel burn rate for your airplane.  You may use any units you wish (gallons per hour, liters per hour, or pounds per hour) and the calculations will work properly for your units.

USER WAYPOINTS

If you input an identifier that
NavPlan can not find in it's databases, a dialog box will appear asking you to either EDIT or ADD the waypoint.  Choosing EDIT allows you to correct the identifier's code.  Choosing ADD allows you to enter the waypoint into the User database.  The input fields are the name, lat/lon and magnetic variation.

After a user waypoint has been stored, you may edit it by entering it's identifier on a Trip screen, tapping the menu icon in the graffiti area, and choosing  User Waypoint on the LOOKUP menu.

DATABASE EXPIRATIONS

Taping on the menu icon in the graffiti area and selecting Database Expirations on the LOOKUP  menu will display when the data is no longer considered current by the FAA, and when new data becomes available.  You will be warned of any expired data when you start the
NavPlan program
