Scorebook Manual

INTRODUCTION

This manual gives basic instructions for using the Scorebook program version 2.0 for the Palm series of PDA's. It assumes that the user is familiar with the use of a scorebook in fullbore target rifle shooting. If not, then further details about scorebook use can be obtained from Trevor Steele . Scorebook requires Palm OS 2.0 or greater and Windows 95 or greater. In addition to print out scoresheets MS Word 97 or greater is required.

Note:

  1. Palm type devices cannot be used in competitions run by the NRA (GB).
  2. The unregistered version cannot save scoresheets on the Palm device or print them from the PC, otherwise it is fully featured. To register the program, visit the link below by clicking on the picture and the registered version, along with the registration code will be sent to you by e-mail.

DESCRIPTION

Scorebook is an electronic fullbore target rifle scorebook for the Palm series of PDA's designed to replace the conventional paper scorebook. It allows the user to plot the positions of each shot and record information about sight settings, shot calls and general information about the shoot. The program will automatically draw elevation and wind graphs according to the English convention. Scorebook also allows the user to view wind tables for the particular distance being shot and tables are included for 200, 300, 500, 600, 800, 900 and 1000 yards. The following targets are supported in version 2.0

With the registered version of the program, the information recorded is saved onboard the Palm device and those registering also get a program which allows files to be viewed and printed from a PC with Word 97 or Word 2000. This will enable the user to print out a day's scoresheets from the comfort of home. No more wet or torn scoresheets to worry about!

USING SCOREBOOK

This section describes how to use the Scorebook program.

Main Screen

Main Screen

This is the screen which appears when the program is first started. It allows the user to create a new scoresheet and open, rename or delete an existing scoresheet. If the new option is chosen, then a form appears to allow a choice of target types. Note that where GB or Canadian targets are being used the appropriate check box above the column should be checked. In the case of a new scoresheet being created, if nothing is written into the scoresheet then it will not be saved when it is closed.

Plot Screen

Plot Screen

The plot screen allows the user to plot the shot positions on the target by a single tap on the screen. The shot value is automatically calculated from the position plotted and is displayed at the top right hand corner of the screen. In addition the shot value is saved for display in the table on the elevation screen, although the value in the table can be overwritten if desired. If the value is incorrect or the shot is in the wrong position, the undo button removes the shot and allows it to be re-plotted. It should be noted that the undo button also removes the shot information from the table in the elevation screen.

The wind bar at the bottom of the screen, allows the user to input the wind setting for the shot about to be plotted. This must be tapped BEFORE the shot is plotted. The bar can be scrolled to the left and right and is graduated in quarter minutes. The wind value chosen is entered in the wind columns of the scoresheet automatically

In between the wind and undo buttons, a sighter/scoring area will appear for competitions allowing more than two sighters. In these competitions Scorebook allows up to five sighters to be recorded (or if more are needed the previous ones can be removed using the undo button). If it is wished to move on to scoring shots before all five sighters are used, then tap once on the word sighter and the word scoring appears, signifying that the next shot will be recorded as a scoring shot.

The Elev and Wind buttons change the display to the Elevation and Wind screens respectively.

Elevation Screen

Elevation Screen

The elevation screen consists of the following elements:

  1. Sight elevation settings.
  2. Left and right wind settings.
  3. Shot call.
  4. Shot values.
  • A word about the English plotting convention is probably useful here for those not familiar with it. The elevation and wind graphs show the fall of shot which would occur if no sight changes were to be made i.e. the true size of the group. This allows the firer to read off the correct sight setting for the group, or an individual shot in the case of wind, at any point in the shoot. In the English convention the shots are plotted so that for a constant sight setting, shots falling above the centre line of the target are plotted higher than shots falling below the centre line. This means that the sight scale appears to be upside down, as a shot going high would have needed a lower sight setting and vice-versa.
  • The sight settings columns accept input in decimal form and convert it to the nearest quarter minute fraction. e.g. to enter 23¾ type 23.75 in the field below and tap the cell or make a graffiti return stroke to input the value.
  • The shot call column accepts any single character input. A suggestion would be to use a > character for shots called left or a < character for shots called left etc.
  • The shot value column accepts any valid shot value. To convert sighters the following procedure should be used after both sighters have been fired:
    1. To convert the second sighter only, select the shot value corresponding to shot "B" by tapping the cell and then type "C" in the field at the bottom of the table.
    2. To convert both sighters select the shot value corresponding to shot "A" by tapping the cell and then type "C" in the field at the bottom of the table.

Note sighters cannot be converted after the first shot to count has been plotted!

  • A scrollbar is located at the right edge of the screen to allow the user to scroll to shots 8 to 15.
  • The total score is printed out below the table and is automatically updated for each shot plotted or shot value changed.

    SCOREBOOK DESKTOP

Those who register the program through http://www.Handango.com will be able to save their scoresheets on the Palm device and will also receive Scorebook Desktop. This is a program which allows scoresheets to be printed out using MS Word 97 or later.

    Using Scorebook Desktop

To start the program either use the start menu or double click the Scorebook Desktop icon. The dialog box which appears allows the user to select a scoresheet from the list. This is then opened in Word. When finished opening scoresheets click on the cancel button. The opened scoresheets may be altered and printed using the normal Word commands and menus.. If you later want to open another scoresheet, use the Scorebook menu which is added to your menu bar. Note that this menu disappears after the Scorebook.doc document is closed.

Tip: To speed up the operation open all the scoresheets you want to work on before clicking on the cancel button.
