Introduction

GUSN  is an application for devices running Palm OS 3.0 or later. It is designed to help you gradually reduce your smoking frequency over a number of days (chosen by you), so that at the end of the period the withdrawal symptoms are minimized. Computer assisted monitoring can greatly improve the success rate of the gradual reduction method (in fact research shows that it can more than DOUBLE your chances compared to smoking at self-estiamted times1) and is an alternative to the abrupt stop required by many nicotine replacement products. The application can remind you that you are due a smoke by means of an audible alarm, if required.

There are two phases to the recommended use of GUSN (though you can jump almost straight into phase 2 ("Quitter") if you choose).

When you first run the application you will be presented with the End User Licence Agreement ("EULA"). When you have accepted this you will be asked if you want to use the Recorder (recommended) or jump straight into the Quitter. We strongly advise that you use the Recorder. It allows accurate recording of any differences in smoking on different days, and differences in lengths of your days.

Please note that GUSN is free to use for so long as you are in the Recorder phase. If you want to use it for more that five days in Quitter, you are required to buy a licence key. To do so please visit us at www.pda-solutions.co.uk/GUSN

 Recorder

Recorder allows you to monitor your smoking habits over a week. Start using it at the beginning of a day, the first time you smoke. As you smoke, simply press the "Smoked" button. In the examples below we start using the system on Thursday.

Here, we have smoked three times so far today, Thursday

Now we have recorded our smoking for four days.

If you need to manually change a day's figures, press on the number. + and - buttons appear to allow changes to be made.

When you have completed a week's figures, or if you change your mind and want to go straight into the Quitting phase, press Quitter. The system will take you to the Profile screen. This shows the figures you have recorded, along with the earliest and latest time that you smoked on each day. If there are any missing details you must fill them in now. Below we pressed Quitter without capturing any data from Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Here is our Profile, we need to fill in the gaps for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

To fill in the gaps, we can either press on a field and entering the data (here we have pressed on the First field for Monday)

or we can use the menu option "Set All Items". If you want to fill in ALL days with these values (even those with entries already in them), check the box "Fill in even Non Blank entries".

This screen also requires the entry of the number of days over which you want to quit. This field must be completed. You can enter whatever value you feel is appropriate, but we recommend a minimum of 21 days. If you want to, you can also enter the price that a pack of 20 costs you, to appear in motivational messages!

Quitter

Quitter is the main part of the system, the screen that you will see day to day as you slowly reduce your smoking. It has three main areas:

When the time is reached for your next smoke, the screen will change:

If you have Alarms turned on (see Preferences), when the Alarm is triggered you will be taken straight to this screen. (Note that an alarm will NOT sound for the first smoke of the day).

Once you reach the target number of smokes for the day, the system will show "No More Today".

If you access the system before the day's start then "Not Yet" is shown.

From the menu you can:

Preferences

The Preferences screen is shown below:

If Use Alarms is checked, the system will sound an audible alarm when the next time to smoke has arrived (except the first smoke of the day). The duration of the alarm can be selected from Long or Short.
If Display Motivational Messages is checked, the system will show an encouraging message each time you smoke.
